The Memory of Water - by Shelagh Stephenson

November 2018

The Memory of Water

Three estranged sisters meet on the eve of their mother’s funeral. As they attempt to organise everything, memories of their childhood run together and the secrets of their separate lives are revealed. Memories fade, blur and persist as the sisters bicker, watched over by the ghost of the mother to whom they are preparing to say goodbye.
“My mother’s the ghost in the machine. She goes through us like wine through water. Whether we like it or not. Nothing ends entirely.” As in life, there was laughter and tears.
